Hierarchy of How to Look Your Best

Art by 11-year-old A.M.

What do I mean by hierarchy? Some things are more important than others. Have you seen a woman with impeccable nails and hair who speaks in an extremely off-putting way? Or one who does her make-up expertly but carries way too much extra weight? There are priorities in life and when it comes to looking our best, some things come before others. Here’s the ranking from most important to least:

  1. Health (mental, physical, emotional)
  2. Personal Hygiene
  3. Body Control (posture and movement, voice quality, facial expressions)
  4. Clothing
  5. Finer Details

Let’s break each down:

Health

This includes mental, physical, and emotional health. Health is wealth, as they say. It’s the fundamental quality of an ideal human specimen. We all have varied levels of health–none of us is perfect. The goal is to become as healthy as each of us has the potential to be. If you need to lose weight, this is an aspect of health that will go very far in terms of your overall wellbeing but also your appearance.

We all know physical beauty can take a woman far, yet if she is mentally or emotionally unhealthy, her attractiveness is going to suffer for it in ways that will soon make all the difference. So detail for yourself where your health needs to be improved and then tackle those points one by one. Do what you can to be as healthy as you can be. Go to therapy, heal from trauma, sort out your environment, create a new mindset–do whatever it takes to become inwardly healthy. This will shine bright for all to see.

Don’t worry about not being perfectly healthy. Seriously. Focus on one challenge at a time. Do your best and work with what you have. This will take you very far. Not to mention, this journey will impact your children one day because you will be their primary role model in life. If you know how to live in a way that promotes your health, so will they!

Personal Hygiene

Personal hygiene and basic grooming fall together. General care of your hair lies here. It’s worth noting that personal hygiene generally relies on health, which is why health comes before it. If you are healthy, you have the motivation and energy needed to brush your teeth, shower, and keep yourself clean and well groomed each day. This impacts health so one supports the other. It’s very much a symbiotic relationship. When you have good personal hygiene, you’re signaling to others that you’re a generally healthy person. If you lack some discipline in this area, a little goes a long way. Don’t stress about it, just steadily work on raising this bar and consistently meeting it for yourself.

Body Movements

An average looking woman can look like the most gorgeous one by knowing how to move gracefully, speak beautifully, and by making pleasant facial expressions.

Posture and Movement

Good posture is good for your health but also your appearance. Having a slumped posture is not just a matter of habit, sitting too much and not working out stomach and back muscles creates a lack of support and thus, a slumped posture. Doing basic exercise can strengthen you and help you stand and sit up-right with less conscious effort. Be mindful until you create this new habit, if needed.

Moving gracefully may be initially easier for those who are athletically gifted but anyone can learn to do it. Practice walking with your back straight, your hips slightly forward, your step light, your head looking straight ahead, your shoulders back, and your arms swinging without exaggeration. After you’ve got this down, learn to turn, sit, and squat in a graceful and ladylike way. We all have physical quirks and I happen to think they’re charming, but couple these with graceful movements and you’ll indicate your personality without detracting from your attractiveness. Old movies show women doing this very well if you need inspiration.

Voice Quality

We’ve lost our emphasis on using our voices these last few decades. One of the more powerful traits you have is your voice. People don’t hear our words so much as how we say something. Learning to speak in an attractive way can increase our overall attractiveness. There is a trend right now where many speak with vocal fry and make every every sentence sound like they’re asking a question. Try not to do the latter as it makes you sound perpetually unsure but at the very least get rid of the vocal fry. It sounds like nails on a chalkboard. It covers up your lovely voice. You don’t have to speak in a high pitched way. You don’t have to try to sound sultry. You don’t have to be overly soft. If you speak with the right volume for your environment and use your natural pitch and tone, without straining it, you’ll sound great. Practice slowing down and modulating your words so they sound clear. Old movies, again, can greatly help in this case. They often feature women who worked just as much on their voice as they did their appearance and their acting. Dropping your voice to your lower register and then raising it for emphasis (and vice a versa) keeps attention and displays your lovely vocal range. It may seem silly to give your voice so much thought but attractiveness is not just what one sees or smells, but also what one hears.

Facial Expressions

Facial expressions are a product of two things: 1) your insides coming out–so for this you need to think pleasant thoughts more often than not or your face will too often give away your worry, anger, annoyance, jealousy, rage, etc. 2) facial expressions also are a matter of habit, you may have picked up some of your expressions from your family or friends. Some of these may not be so nice looking. Monitor the faces you make during the course of a day and watch out for any harsh, ugly, or unpleasant expressions you may be regularly making. It’s ok to be funny and make some I Love Lucy faces. But contorting your otherwise lovely face too much when you’re upset is not going to do you any favors. If you’re tense, learn to relax your facial muscles. Learn to soften your gaze. If you feel sad, don’t try to cover it up. You’ll only look harsh. Being submissive to the way you feel but in a soft, feminine way, is generally the key. It will look alright, I promise. A pout always looks better on a woman than a grimace.

Doing all these will truly make you stand out in a sea of women who have not received any guidance in this area. More importantly, you’ll get a confidence boost that is grounded within your own body and within your own control, not from an expensive necklace or nice bag, or anything outside of you.

Clothes

Clothing is a favorite for us women but as you see, it’s not at the top of the list. You notice we’re working on attractiveness from within, to your plain physical body, and now, to the way you dress yourself. Each day is an opportunity to enhance our beauty or take from it based on our clothing choices. If you’re here, I take it you want to dress in a feminine way. There’s more to it than that. You want to learn to dress for your lifestyle, your personality, your body type, and your overall vibe. Learning all these can become somewhat of a journey, one women tend to enjoy. Most women learn to dress themselves well after age 30, not before, but there’s nothing stopping someone younger from figuring out what works best for them. It just takes some time, self-awareness, and effort.

Dressing for your lifestyle is a must because you need to be able to own what is practical for you to wear each day. A closet full of glamorous clothing you never wear is you begging for sadness. Carefully construct your wardrobe out of items that suit your current daily activities. Casual clothing can be just as lovely as more formal attire.

Dressing for your personality involves knowing yourself. I have a blog post on this you can check out. Otherwise, you want to avoid obvious mistakes like dressing in sharp, bright, glitzy clothing if your personality is really gentle and quiet and down-to-earth. Don’t wear vulgar clothing if you’re a wholesome person. Don’t wear shirts with slogans unless they represent you completely. You get the gist. It’s about not signaling against who we actually are. You can for fun and adventure, I suppose, but be aware that people may misinterpret you and perhaps you don’t want that to happen. It’s best to keep costumes for Halloween only.

Dressing for your body type is tricky but so rewarding. Check out Kibbe and body type related Youtube videos to go down the fun rabbit hole on this topic. You will come out amazed at how bone structure and muscle and natural fat accumulation make huge differences between us. You will be so relieved to figure out what looks and feels good on you and what looks authentically you. I can’t recommend this enough.

If you can, get your clothing tailored to you or purchase only what fits you properly. Too long sleeves or too short pants aren’t going to do you justice. Learn what brands serve you best and then seek them out. Get bra fitted so that you are not one of the many women who wears the wrong, unflattering and uncomfortable size. Wear comfortable shoes so that you are comfortable and your movements don’t look odd.

Remember that the way we dress speaks for us before we speak for ourselves. Choose carefully and be true to yourself. For example, even though I love dresses and they’re the classic epitome of feminine attire, I don’t wear many. Skirts work better for me so I wear those instead.

Finer Details

These are the finishing touches, the scent you may choose to wear, the nail polish, jewelry, and your hairstyle. Women tend to spend a lot of time and energy here, skipping some of the above steps. Ladies, you’re not doing yourself any favors.

These are details that men do not notice much unless they are already close to you. Even now, my husband can hardly tell between my make-up and no make-up days. He doesn’t notice if I’ve colored my hair. He doesn’t pay much attention to my nails or jewelry. He doesn’t care for me to wear perfume. I’ve heard many women say similar about their husbands. My point is that these details are last in the hierarchy because while they certainly enhance your beauty and refine it and often provide you a boost of energy or confidence, you don’t want to put much time or resources into this area until the rest of the list is taken care of.

If you have acne but also want expensive highlights, you’re better off paying the dermatologist than the hairstylist. If you have overwhelming anxiety, you don’t want to cope by merely getting your nails done–you need to get to the root cause of that issue instead.

Take the time you need to figure out where it is worth it for you to use details to complete your unique look. But don’t spend much time here before putting sufficient work into steps 1-4.

I highly suggest using a notebook, virtual or otherwise, to track the above steps. You’ll do better to stay organized and keep yourself accountable. Also, you can remind yourself to prioritize these in the correct order. You’ll see a major reward from doing so and as a huge plus, you’ll be on your way towards feeling your very best!

How to Lose 40 Pounds

Why 40 pounds?

It’s not exactly arbitrary. The average American woman is about 5’4 and weighs a little over 170 pounds. Losing about 40 pounds, give or take a bit to accommodate one’s height, muscle mass, and bone structure, should put one at a healthy weight. Adjust according to your needs, of course.

The other reason is that I have lost that amount of weight in the past and so I know how to do it. I’m also a certified health coach and have spent much time learning about nutrition and overall health. Not that this matters as much. The reasoning/argument/science is what will help you lose weight, but I just want to let you know that I have made this journey. It’s worth it.

“Abs Are Made in the Kitchen”

First, it’s important to know that your body weight is primarily managed by your diet. Exercise is an essential component for good health and will give you a nice physique via muscle mass, graceful movement, and help keep your metabolism healthy. However, to reveal that physique and achieve optimal metabolic health, the extra fat must come off via the way you eat. Unless you’re a pro athlete or are training for a marathon, exercise is not going to be your path to weight-loss.

Knowing what to eat is incredibly difficult if one takes into consideration the wide range of information available on the topic. Here’s how I recommend going about figuring out your diet:

Know (and Respect) Thyself

Let’s start with the obvious which is often not acted upon. Do not consume anything that makes you feel bad. For example, if you get bloated every time you eat dairy, do not eat dairy anymore. You don’t want to eat something that causes negative symptoms and thus probably inflammation. If you feel anxious or sluggish after a high-sugar food, avoid high-sugar foods. If caffeine makes you snap at others, cut it back as much as possible. And if you have any food allergies or sensitivities, avoid those foods.

If healthy, high protein foods like chicken or steak give you heartburn, indigestion, or slow digestion, take a Betaine HCL with Pepsin capsule with those meals until you develop enough stomach acid to handle larger quantities of protein on your own. Usually one bottle is enough.

Acknowledge any food issues you have. You’ll need to keep these in mind. So if you tend to binge eat or can’t go by the ice cream isle without buying Ben and Jerry’s, recognize this reality, and guard against these tendencies.

Increase Protein and Crowd Out Energy Sources

You know which foods have protein. Did you know that humans will be hungry until they fulfill their protein requirements each day? Have you ever ate a large amount of something high in fat and carb calories and wondered why you were still hungry afterwards? This is why. Your body keeps asking for food until you give it its protein requirements. So leverage this by eating plenty of lean protein.

Protein is not only filling and nearly impossible to overeat but it is extremely nutrient rich–particularly animal sources. When you get your required protein and nutrients, your body can stop asking for food and also has a better chance at running all of its functions at optimal levels.

Energy in food is simply fat and carbohydrates. Your body absolutely requires some fat. There’s no carbohydrate requirement in the human body. However, you choose your blend of fat and carbs so that it works for you. If you want to maintain your weight, you eat sufficient protein plus an amount of fat and carbs that sustains your weight. If you want to lose weight, you need to cut back on your energy intake by reducing either fat or carbs or both. To control hunger, increase your lean protein intake. Lean protein sources include egg whites, lean ground beef or steak, chicken breasts, and tuna. Sounds like what body builders eat to lower their body fat before a competition, right? That’s because it works to do exactly that.

This diet will make you lean while sparing your muscle mass and fueling your body for more muscle growth which then helps you burn more calories and helps you stay lean. Your goal is to crowd out excess energy foods via sufficient protein. However, fat and carbs add flavor and enjoyment to meals so while you’re in the losing weight stages, liberally use herbs and spices you like in order to give your food more flavor.

Once you’ve lost the weight you want to lose, increase your fat and carbohydrates to a maintenance level. How to maintain without gaining again? Eat real foods, get sufficient protein, and the additional fat and carbs that you can fit into your appetite will be the approximate amount you need without going over.

Repeat Meals

It’s hard to overeat the same meals over and over so attempt the same breakfast and the same lunch and the same dinner each day. The monotony will help stop you from overeating (there’s research on this, it’s called “habituation”). It will also save you time and encourage you to prepare your own meals from bulk prices, which will be undoubtedly better for you health-wise and financially.

Eat Real Food

Most people know what real food is–meat, grains, dairy, vegetables, nuts/seeds, and fruits in their whole form, with little adulteration. So for example, a steak, steel cut oats, no sugar added yogurt, and vegetables and fruits that you buy fresh from the produce section.

Many try to use honey in place of sugar. There are also sweeteners like erythritol (Swerve), erythritol blended with monkfruit extract (Lakanto), allulose, and stevia, if you’re looking to avoid sweeteners that may negatively impact blood glucose levels.

I advise cooking your food with animal fats like lard and tallow. Butter, avocado oil, and perhaps even coconut oil are fine, too, in my opinion. Whatever you do, avoid inflammatory vegetable/seed oils. This means that many boxed and jarred foods are a no-no.

The most efficient way to shop for real food is to go through the produce section, meat and seafood, deli and cheese, and stop over at nuts and seeds. If you can use a service where you make your grocery order online and then pick it up (Walmart is free), I suggest using it as it helps you not impulsively shop with your eyes. And each week you can order the same thing and stay consistent with what you’re spending on and preparing.

If you don’t eat animals you can focus on eggs, whey protein, tofu, and/or legumes to meet your high-protein needs.

When You Feel like Snacking

When you just want to eat something but aren’t hungry, determine if you’re thirsty, or bored, or anxious, etc, and then try to tackle the root cause in some way. Sometimes a walk or a bubble bath or a pot of tea is what you actually need. And if you must put something stimulating in your mouth, try mints, sugar-free jello, or flavored sparkling water.

If You’re Too Sweet

If you have been told your blood sugar is a bit elevated, reduce or eliminate carbohydrate energy sources, especially from sweets and grains. I have type 1 diabetes and have eaten low carb for many years and maintain a normal BMI with a good amount of muscle mass, low triglycerides, and high insulin sensitivity (and a non-diabetic A1c of 4.9). I know of many type 2 diabetics who use a low carb diet to stay off of diabetic medications and who also maintain a healthy weight and good overall health.

A Great Resource

Dr. Ted Naiman’s book called the PE Diet explains this protein to energy ratio concept better than I do and gives great guidance on how to lose weight. Check out his website here for excellent explanations and food inspiration pictures.

If you have diabetes please, please check out Dr. Bernstein’s Diabetes Solution book. It is a lifesaver and I say that in no uncertain terms.

Feminine Wardrobe Basics That Will Never Go Out of Style

Drawing by 11-year old A.M.

If you’re looking to change or add to your wardrobe and want to incorporate some basic feminine pieces, this post is for you.

Importantly, these pieces won’t go out of style because they’ve already stood the test of time. Focusing on timeless elements, as least to some degree, helps to save money and encourages us to acquire lasting quality.

Many women have numerous pairs of dress shoes, earrings, blouses, or yoga pants, and often don’t wear most of them very often or want to wear them less often. In another post we’ll talk about how to let mediocre items go, but for now, take your favorites, those you constantly wear, and note what it is you like about them. From here you’ll get a realistic place from which to start when thinking of other items you want to purchase.

For the following, you’ll want to edit in your own style and color choices. Here are feminine wardrobe basics that won’t go out of style:

  • button-up shirts in billowy fabrics or fitted but not tight crisp cotton
  • nautical striped tops with crew or boat necks
  • t-shirt style tops, long or short-sleeved, that are not see-through
  • trousers with pleats (more points if you add a flexible belt)
  • ankle length pants
  • cotton, silk, rayon, modal for tops
  • wool, cashmere, knitted cotton for sweaters/cardigans
  • cotton, wool, jean material for pants
  • leather or suede shoes
  • half-inch or one-inch heeled shoes with almond shaped toes
  • neutral colors plus one to three accent colors that flatter you
  • skirts of all lengths and styles except those that are too short
  • opaque solid tights and knit stockings in neutral colors
  • dresses of all kinds except those that are too short, too tight, or those that restrict your movement
  • necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings that don’t get in your way or impede your daily activities

Consider avoiding:

  • heavy fancy embellishments for everyday wear unless you can be consistent and it compliments your lifestyle
  • colors that don’t complement you (otherwise wear them below your chest, away from your face)
  • overly tight clothes (if you must wear yoga pants, wear a long top or tunic for sufficient modesty)
  • overly loose/baggy clothing unless it truly suits you (it may in the case of some women)
  • overly trendy silhouettes that will soon go out of style
  • high-heels unless you can walk gracefully and without pain
  • slogans or symbols (with exception of your religious symbols or display of patriotism to the country in which you reside)
  • anything uncomfortable, ill-fitting, dirty, wrinkled, or overly casual or dressy for your daily lifestyle
  • anything highly impractical or immodest as this sends the wrong messages about you and your ability to make wise decisions

In this author’s opinion, feminine basics are not merely a pink dress or skirt. You may not want to wear something like this when raising a puppy or looking after a toddler or going out in the cold. You have the wisdom and sense to choose practical clothing for your particular daily activities. You can make simple and even rugged clothes like jeans and a leather jacket adequately feminine by avoiding tacky or masculine designs, crude cuts, unappealing color combinations, and improper fit.

Feminine clothing is practical, comfortable, aesthetically appealing, sufficiently modest, and thoughtful towards the woman wearing it and her activities that day.

Consider some of the following to add some extra feminine touches once you’ve put on a basic outfit:

  • a scarf draped around your neck or tied in your hair
  • a hair accessory like a barrette or headband
  • a broche
  • a nice belt
  • shoes with a small feminine embellishment like a bow or tassel
  • polished nails
  • a spray of perfume or some scent

Do remember that more than anything, your behavior speaks for you. Get dressed in a way that will represent you well and then let your actions do the rest of the talking. Feminine aspects in your dress will help encourage you to act that way, but if you must go out and do something like shovel manure, rest assured, you can wear boots, jeans, and a coat, and with the attitude of a lady, you’ll still look every bit as one.
